The Seaswirl Striper 2901 Walk Around is a big, beefy combination fishing and family cruising boat based on an express or walkaround (with flush sidedecks) design. Some of the same features that make it a good, seaworthy offshore fishing boat, like high freeboard, plenty of cockpit coaming height and generous beam, also make it well suited for family cruising.
The Seaswirl's cockpit offers plenty of room for serious fishing and it's well equipped for the sport. There are 6 rod racks in the cockpit liner and 4 rod holders in the gunwale, along with a big, 40-gallon livewell. A pair of insulated, in-deck fish boxes drain completely through well-designed, large scupper recesses through a macerator and then overboard.
The 2901 is a safe seagoing platform for the whole family. This boat has a deep cockpit"29 in. from deck to coaming"which makes it a great family boat with the extra measure of security for kids. The deck is also 11 in. off the waterline, which adds belowdeck volume for the boat's big fish boxes, as well as added reserve buoyancy for improved seaworthiness. There's a deep toe kick around the cockpit, along with a hand railing on the gunwale, another extra safety step taken by the builder. There's also a hot-and-cold shower at the transom to wash off the salt after a hard day's tubing or boarding.
Seaswirl builds the cockpit deck with a fuel-tank removal hatch"even builders of more expensive boats often neglect this step to save money, opting instead for a scribe line in the deck to mark where it should be cut when the time comes to replace the aluminum tank. The cockpit drains through four recessed (read: no standing water) grates leading overboard through 1-in.hoses. A more rapid draining capability could be utilized, such as moving up to the quad 2-in. drain lines used by sister companies Wellcraft and Hydra-Sports.
