Model Introduction
The Scout 221 Winyah Bay Center Console is built for inshore bay fishing, and for short jaunts in open water (weather permitting), but it would be just as well suited to large lakes. It has a moderate deadrise, low freeboard and a low deck that limits seaworthiness, but carries out its inshore mission very well. The boat has a capacity of 7 (or 1100 lbs. of) passengers, and 2,400 lbs. total weight, and is rated for a 300-hp engine.

Construction
Scouts are very well built, as well as any in the saltwater fishing industry. They are built entirely of rot-proof fiberglass and composite coring materials""no balsa or any other kind of wood is used structurally. Each Scout starts off with a 3 oz. skin coat of mat wet out in general purpose resin over the gelcoat, followed by fiberglass reinforcements. Many manufacturers use a premium vinylester resin for the skin coat, since it is inherently more resistant to osmotic blistering, but Scout says they have never had a problem with blistering, being very careful to completely wet out the mat with properly catalyzed resin. The vinylester route is preferred, but Scout says that blistering has never been a problem, which is what's important in the final analysis.

Divinycell coring is used to stiffen the hull sides, while the bottom is solid fiberglass. A one-piece flanged fiberglass hull support grid is bonded to the hull skin with methacrylate adhesive. One unique characteristic of Scout's design is that the hull stringers continue past the transom to the outboard bracket, so the main hull structure directly absorbs the engine's weight, torque and thrust. Another unique design feature is the hull-to-deck joint, which is sort of a reverse shoe-box joint""the deck fits inside the hull part, and the joint is continuously bonded together using methacrylate adhesive material.
