Organic products for your face instead of in your mouth

 

Walk down the cosmetic aisle in any drug store and you’ll likely see labels touting “organic,” “natural” or “raw” products. Even some packaging is being made from recycled materials. It’s surely a sign that what’s inside is better and safer, right? Not necessarily.

As with any personal-care product, buyers need to read labels and do their research.


What exactly are organic cosmetics?

“Organic” and “natural” are not the same thing. According to futurenatural.com, a site that features natural and organic personal-care products, “natural” means “any substance that is harvested from nature and then isolated and purified by a variety of environmentally sound techniques.” Organic includes natural products, but goes a step further to indicate those products have been grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers and processed without man-made chemicals.

“Companies are jumping on the ‘green’ trend, and these terms are way overused, and their meanings are distorted for the sake of marketing and green-washing,” said Jessa Blades, an organic beauty consultant and makeup artist in New York City.



What does “certified organic” mean?

Products stamped “certified organic” have met criteria set by a certifying body. However, there are many certifying bodies worldwide and no set standards among them. Some of the most prominent certifiers in the United States include the USDA, EcoCert, Natural Products Association, OASIS and NSF International.

But beware: “Plenty of synthetic ingredients are found in products … even those that have followed the proper channels to be certified organic,” according to an article on www.cosmeticscop.com by beauty expert Paula Begoun, author of “Don’t Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me.”



How much do organic cosmetics costs?

Blades said organic cosmetic products may be more expensive than most conventional drugstore offerings but are comparable to cosmetics at department or specialty stores.

“But in my mind, the cost is really minimal because in the long run, these choices we make affect us in profound ways,” she said. “By buying these products, we are voting with our dollars and making a statement to the conventional beauty industry.”

As with any buying decision, the worth is subject to individual opinion.

“You also need to be aware that there is no substantiated, published research anywhere proving that organic ingredients are superior to non-organic or synthetic ingredients,” according to Begoun’s article.
