Model Introduction
The queen of the MasterCraft fleet (at least for now) the MasterCraft 280 STS is noticeably different, and in a number of ways, measurably more capable, than anything out there. The product of a creative product development shop at MasterCraft, the 280 is a big, solidly built bowrider rated to carry (and comfortably seat) 15 people. This makes it, among other things, a direct competitor for the big sterndrive-powered bowriders. It's an excellent boat for an extended family that spends time together on the water, or for a family that just wants more room to spread out""there's no substitute for size and displacement when it comes to a comfortable ride and on-the-water environs.

The MasterCraft 280 STS also has tremendous pulling power with big v-drive inboards geared down to drive power props. The boat basically has the tow capacity of a small tugboat""along with a very plush and family-friendly layout. A pair of economical and reliable (the drivetrain is quite simple compared to a sterndrive) vee-drive gas inboards provide the power, and a good-riding hull and shoal draft opens up a lot of cruising opportunities.

Hull Design
The MasterCraft has a modified vee bottom with sponsons forward. These hulls, which produce good handling and a high turn of speed for a given horsepower, are well suited to both inshore and large-lake use. Chine flats and running strakes add lift at speed, and the reverse chines make the boat more stable at rest. While the sponsons limit hull deadrise, and therefore rough-water ride quality, forward, they also substantially open up the beam at the gunwale, adding considerable interior volume in the bow area""a tradeoff that's clearly in the interests of boat owners in this market. Rounded hull sections aft add to the smoothness of the ride, and also help shape the wake so it's suitable for boarders. Both the propeller and rudder strut pads are mounted flush to the hull bottom to minimize drag. ...
