The go green motto is taking the world by storm. The words natural and organic are becoming part of the vocabulary of the everyday citizen. Many of us fear we will have to give up our favorite foods, clothing or household items to be good to the environment and ourselves. This, however, is not the case. IT companies are now making more natural ergonomic equipment – such as the ergonomic mouse or keyboard. There is also a new touchpad phone on the market that features the use of solar power. All thee innovative go green products are making it easier for everyday folks to jump on the bandwagon.

Okay, so your desk equipment is now natural. You have a mouse and keyboard that is earth friendly. How much farther can you go when customizing your workspace? There are now both green friendly furniture solutions as well as ergonomic equipment such as backrests that are made with natural and/or organic materials. For those people worried about the chemicals this will be a welcome relief to your workspace. There are now more earth friendly ways to light up your office as well. Get rid of those nasty lights that give us all a headache and opt for energy efficient lights and fixtures.

What’s the big deal with this go green movement anyway? Why should you customize your workspace and your home to incorporate these new products? By embracing a greener lifestyle you are not only helping to improve the environment but also you health. Many times, scientists don’t understand the ramifications of a new product or chemical and, even though there are not immediate side effects, there may be some that we are unaware of down the road. Choosing a natural, organic lifestyle minimizes the types of things that can affect your health.

Going green is becoming very easy for most aspects of our lives. The unfortunate reality for many is that with a declining economy the money just isn’t there for upgrading to these more expensive products. However, even if you can’t afford the equipment you can afford these office tips. You can maximize computer efficiency by turning off your computer when you leave for the evening. Don’t print as much. Think about each item you are printing and try to keep printing to a minimum. Go paperless – instead of mailing items out to people, try e-mail. If you can, store documents online. Recycle whenever you can – even if it means just adding a recycle bin to the lunchroom for those soda cans. Another great tip is bringing your own silverware and lunch Tupperware, plates or bowls. This can cut down on a lot of extra trash. Finally, think about how you get to work. Can you carpool? Is public transportation available?

Going green can take many forms. From the new office equipment that touts natural products or the energy efficient light sources. There are things that we can buy and things that we can do to make a difference, even if it is just a small one, to the world around us. You’ll find that by integrating some of these little tips into your daily work life that they aren’t such a big deal or such an inconvenience after all.
