Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products

The green campaign is everywhere, and it’s gaining momentum. This year instead of resolutions to hit the gym every day for three hours, try taking smaller steps to improve your life by making it a little greener for yourself and your family. This step can be as small as buying eco-friendly products at your next trip to the grocery store. Look for these four labels on your local grocer’s shelf.

Clorox Professional Green Works
A trusted household cleaning product brand now has expanded into the green market. They have seven green products available on the market.

Simple Green
One of the first eco-friendly cleaning product companies continues their long tradition with more than 20 different products.

Method
Adam Lowry and Eric Ryan, owners of Method, do it all green. All their products (ranging from air fresheners to hand soap) are made from biodegradable ingredients like soy, coconut and palm oils.

Seventh Generation
This Burlington, Vermont-based company has been creating “environmentally-responsible” products for the past 20 years.  Along with a plethora of products they are also active in communities to promote greener living.

Shopping tips

Avoid unsubstantiated and vague claims, such as “natural,” “organic,” “ecologically friendly” or “non-toxic.” The term “biodegradable” is meaningless on cleaning products, as most substances will eventually break down given enough time and the right environmental conditions.

Look for cleaners in large containers or bulk packages, and buy concentrates, which use less water.

Although most cleaners don't list ingredients, you can learn something about a product's hazards by reading its label. Defined by the CPSC, the warning labels “Danger," and “Poison” indicate that a product is corrosive, flammable or combustible, irritating or a strong sensitizer, and that they have the potential to cause serious personal injury or illness during, or as a result of, normal use. Products labeled “Danger” or “Poison” are typically most hazardous, while those bearing a “Warning” or “Caution” label are moderately hazardous.

Usage Tips

Keep the room well ventilated while cleaning.

Keep all cleaners out of reach of children and pets, and store them in childproof cabinets.

Leave all products in the original packaging, which should provide instructions for use and any cautionary and first-aid information.

If a mess ever requires heavy-duty, potentially hazardous cleaners, minimize harsh fumes by placing a fan in the doorway facing out of the room during cleaning and immediately clean any spills.
