Model Introduction
The Cobalt 302 is the largest bowrider in the builder's lineup, offering plenty of room, seating and storage capacity for a large family. The boat's size, well-designed hull form and weight make it very comfortable in 2- to 3-ft. seas, it is quiet at cruise speed, and its power and acceleration capability make it a good wakeboard or inflatable towing platform as well. The boat's high-end appearance is matched by its intelligent engineering and practicality of use and ownership.

Construction
After the gelcoat is sprayed on the mold, a vinylester-based Zycon barrier coat that's about the same thickness as the gelcoat (22 mils.) goes on the bottom to protect against blistering and the sides to reduce print-through. The bottom is a solid-fiberglass laminate, while SprayCore (80 mils.) is used on the sides to further prevent print-through. The hull is supported by a network of high-hat hollow stringers that are flanged and bonded to the hull with a high-strength adhesive. Marine-grade plywood bulkheads are tabbed to the hull and the stringers. The single-piece deckliner goes on next, attached to the hull with a shoebox hull-to-deck joint, with stainless steel self tapping screws every foot into a strip of pressure-treated plywood. Two more rows of screws follow, securing on the rubrail and stainless insert.

Hull Design
Cobalt designs its own running surfaces in-house. The boat has a modified-vee bottom with an aggressive entry for a smooth ride in a chop, reverse chines and running strakes to add lift and deflect spray, and 20° of transom deadrise for a good mix of efficiency and ride quality. Generous freeboard adds hull volume, and makes for a higher, safer cockpit. This Cobalt is evidence that practicality and safety (with the added interior freeboard) don't have to be at odds with attractive styling.
