2009 Volkswagen Rabbit
The Volkswagen Rabbit replaced the popular Golf as Volkswagen's entry-level model in 2006. Consumers quickly warmed to the compact hatchback as it offered a high level of standard equipment, a comfortable interior, and impressive safety features for the price. The standard powerplant is a 2.5-liter 5-cylinder engine powering the front wheels through a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. According to the EPA, the Rabbit earns fuel economy ratings of 20 mpg city and 29 mpg highway in testing (with the automatic transmission). The suspension design is independent up front and multi-link in the rear to offer a comfortable yet sporty ride, VW says. When surveyed, owners voiced their opinions and pushed the Volkswagen Rabbit to a top-three ranking in its segment in the 2008 J.D. Power and Associates Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, a measure of consumer delight with the design, content, layout and performance of their new vehicles. The Rabbit also earned a "Top Safety Pick" designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The Volkswagen Rabbit is a carryover for 2009, as a new model is on the horizon.
