2009 Honda Civic
The compact Honda Civic has been in production since 1972. Over the years, it has been manufactured in many different body styles with countless engine choices. Now in its eighth generation (last redesigned for 2006), the Civic is offered in a choice between coupe and sedan. Engine choices include both gasoline, hybrid and natural gas models. The standard engine is a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder driving the front wheels. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard, with a 5-speed automatic optional. The EPA rates the Honda Civic's fuel economy at 25 mpg city and 36 mpg highway with the automatic transmission. The Hybrid model earned ratings of 40 mpg city and 45 mpg highway. The suspension on all models is independent in the front, with a multi-link design in the rear. Brakes are front disc/rear drum on most models (the EX/EX-L and performance-tuned Si models receive disc brakes on all four corners). Anti-lock braking control (ABS) is standard. In our 2008 Initial Quality Study (IQS), the industry benchmark for new-vehicle quality measured at 90 days of ownership, the Honda Civic ranked highest in its segment. The Honda also proved itself in crash testing when it earned "5-star" crash test scores from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The popular car also earned a "Top Safety Pick" designation (2009 models with optional stability control) from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)"just keep in mind that frontal crash ratings for small cars apply only if the car impacts another vehicle of about the same size and weight.
